Hail and Well Met!

Welcome to The Front Left Gang’s Home Page! We are four students, Alyson, Andrea, Dom, and Justina  (along with our faithful Reading Group Leader, Bob) taking a Rowan University Writing Arts class called How Writers Read. You can find out everything about the course and our methods here. Basically, How Writers Read “introduces students to theoretical methods of reading complex and sophisticated texts. Students will study theories of reading and writing that concern structure, register, genre, intertextuality, and rhetorical concerns. The course presents these theories and correlative methods through readings, and students then practice applying these methods during class discussions and in writing using a series of self-selected texts as the objects of study” (Kopp).

We began by reading Herman Hesse’s Demian as a class (along with the other reading groups, whose blogs you can find linked below). Our group’s “self-selected texts” include: Paula Hawkins’ The Girl on the Train, David Cullen’s Columbine, Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, and Karen Tei Yamashita’s Through the Arc of the Rainforest. Our reading proposal will tell you more about the books we chose and why we chose them.
